How Do You Determine Ignition Delay?

Ignition Delay (or ignition time) is an important phenomenon for a fuel and is often used as a metric for validating a newly developed or modified mechanism.  When searching the literature for ignition time values, you must be careful when comparing the values calculated in CHEMKIN-PRO to the experimental data.  Why? Because different methods can be used to determine when ignition occurs, e.g. temperature change, maximum species fraction, etc.  To handle all types of experimental data, CHEMKIN-PRO supports multiple options that can be used to predict Ignition Delay.  These options can be found on the Output à Ignition Delay panel when using the Closed Homogeneous Batch Reactor.  When working with experimental data from the literature, keep in mind the source of the data and how it was measured.  You can read more about Ignition Delay in the Application Note on the Reaction Design website.

Reaction Design Distinguished Speaker Series
YouTubeCheck out the interview with Dr. Charlie Westbrook where he
discusses how powerful computers allowed him to simulate the chemistry from methane in 1980 to hexadecane today.

Charlie Westbrook is a senior scientist at Lawrence National Laboratory, president of the Combustion Institute, and chief technical advisor of the Model Fuels Consortium.

Reaction Design''s Dr. Long Liang Receives 2010 SAE Excellence in Oral Presentation Award
SAE International
SAE 2010 logo
We''re proud to announce that Dr. Long Liang is a recipient of the 2010
SAE Excellence in Oral Presentation Award for his talk entitled "Efficient Simulation of Diesel Engine Combustion Using Realistic Chemical Kinetics in CFD". The award was presented to those who gave outstanding presentations during the SAE 2010 World Congress in Detroit, MI as determined by attendee votes.

The presentation highlighted the results of applying an innovative suite of software tools and techniques aimed at reducing the high computational cost of solving detailed chemistry in a large engine CFD simulation.

7th Biennial CHEMKIN in Combustion Workshop Proceedings Now Available

CK_WorkshopAt the 33rd International Symposium on Combustion in Beijing, China, Reaction Design held its 7th Biennial CHEMKIN in Combustion Workshop.  Thank you to all the commercial and academic participants for making the workshop such a success!

Presentations from the 2010 CHEMKIN in Combustion Workshop are now available for download.

Model Fuels Consortium (MFC) II Mid-Year Meetings

The Model Fuels Consortium, the highly regarded, industry-funded project for the development of cleaner-burning, higher-mileage vehicles, held two mid-year meetings: one in Frankfurt,Germany, during June; and another in Tokyo, Japan, during July.  Members from all over gathered for an overview of the Consortium''s excellent progress.
