Overview

Title: Lessons from Incidents: Placing Best Practice Analysis at the Heart of Process Safety Management

Time: 12AM 台灣時間 12/14/2017

Duration: 1 hour

Summary

Several major incidents involving flare and relief systems can be traced to a failure to recognize hazards and perform adequate analysis.

This webcast will use the incidents as examples to explain how industry guidance, such as API 521, and good engineering practices have been enhanced to prevent future accidents and promote inherently safe design. It will describe the best practice solutions you need to effectively manage process safety:

  • Key elements of pressure relief and blowdown verifications to ensure PSM compliance
  • Up-to-date approaches for assessing:
    • vessel survivability under fire attack
    • brittle fracture risks during depressurization
    • transient process behavior during relief events.
  • Minimizing capital expenditure without compromising safety

It will be of interest to hydrocarbon engineers, especially those with an interest in safety, flare simulation experts and managers with responsibility for asset and plant integrity.

Speakers:

Paul Frey, CEng MIChemE, Principal Consultant Engineer, Process Systems Enterprise

Paul Frey is the lead of PSEs Flare, Relief & Blowdown Centre of Expertise. Paul is a Chartered Engineer with over 25 years’ experience in the oil & gas industry. He has supported relief and flare projects for most major operators around the world.  Paul leads flare design studies and relief verification audits, and advises companies on their process safety standards and guidelines.

Paul is also a contributor to the API 520 and 521 Pressure Relieving Standards Committee meetings.

James Marriott, PhD CEng MIChemE, Vice-President, PSE Oil & Gas

James Marriott is the Head of PSE’s Oil & Gas business unit. James led the development of PSEs next generation approaches for the safe design and operation of pressure relief and blowdown systems.

Moderator:

Lee Nichols, Editor/Associate Publisher, Hydrocarbon Processing

Lee Nichols is the Editor/Associate Publisher of Hydrocarbon Processingand Gas Processing magazines. At present, he manages all content for both publications, as well as Hydrocarbon Processing’s annual Market Data Book and US Gas Plant Directory. Lee has more than a decade of experience in the downstream industry, and has a primary expertise in market research and trends analysis for the global downstream construction and investment sector. Lee has published over 50 articles in Hydrocarbon Processing and Gas Processing magazines, as well as presented numerous public/private speeches/webcasts on the global downstream construction and investment sector. He has a Bachelor of Science in Journalism from Texas A&M University.
